A Letter from the Executive Director
First and foremost, thank you. Thank you to K-12 school professionals, who have navigated another difficult year – teachers, of course, but also counselors, administrators, specialists, school psychologists, coaches, and athletic trainers. We are so appreciative of what you are doing to support students in and out of the classroom. And thank you to the alumni and friends who have so generously supported the UVA School of Education and Human Development. I hope you'll enjoy reading the heartwarming stories in this report and feel the immense gratitude we have for all you do to support the field of education.
This past summer, UVA and EHD welcomed Stephanie Rowley as Dean at the start of the summer, and said farewell to Bob Pianta after many years of dedicated service and a vision that placed the School of Education and Human Development as one of the top schools in education nationwide. Dean Rowley has been welcomed by students and faculty at EHD, as well as by the UVA community. I hope you have the opportunity to meet her soon, and until then, I recommend you listen to her podcast with Jim Ryan. It will give you a little insight into her areas of interest, priorities for the school and enable you to get to know her a little better. EHD is fortunate to have Dean Rowley at the helm and we look forward to advancing the mission of the school and improving education across the Commonwealth and nationally.
This year was a record-breaking year for scholarship support, thanks to your generous efforts. In April 2023, we distributed over $800K in student scholarships and awards – our largest total ever – to over 160 students. Yet, student need remains high. Scholarship support allows students to focus on their research and program areas without having to work outside jobs or accumulate crippling student debt. Thanks to all of you who have supported us so generously – it truly makes a difference!
As you read through this Annual Report, please know how much we appreciate your support, your partnership and your commitment to EHD – YOU, are making a difference in the lives of the next generation of leaders.
With much gratitude,
Mike
